Course Overview
This course helps behavioral health professionals recognize warning signs, assess suicide risk, and respond effectively to suicidal crises.
Participants will learn how to ask direct questions about suicide, evaluate ideation, intent, plan, and access to means, determine level of risk, and develop collaborative safety plans. The training also covers strategies for reducing access to lethal means and determining appropriate levels of care.
Additional topics include documentation, consultation, legal and ethical risk management, telehealth considerations, cultural responsiveness, higher-risk populations, therapist impact, and postvention support.
Course Objectives
After completing this training, participants will be able to:
Identify common suicide risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs relevant to clinical practice.
Conduct a structured suicide risk assessment using direct questions about suicidal ideation, intent, plan, means, and related indicators.
Differentiate levels of suicide risk and determine appropriate clinical responses based on assessment findings.
Develop collaborative safety plans and apply strategies to reduce access to lethal means.
Determine when outpatient management is appropriate and when hospitalization or a higher level of care should be considered.
Apply best practices for documentation, consultation, and legal and ethical risk management when working with suicidal clients.

Carmen Benway is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the founder of Pacific Neurocounseling. She began working in the behavioral health field in 2011, starting with foster youth involved in the child welfare system. Over the years, she has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including DSHS programs, psychiatric hospitalization, adult family homes, and now private practice. Her work has included supporting individuals with severe and complex mental health needs, as well as helping clients navigate challenging systems of care. Carmen now leads a growing private practice serving clients in Washington and Oregon.
